The MV Andrew Wilson was a 40m grab hopper dredger that was sunk on 7th September, 2026. The first new wreck in SA since the HMAS Hobart in 2002.

The boat is 40m long and 9.5m wide, and sits upright in 20m of water. With the top deck sitting in around 16m, with lower decks going down to 18m, this is a very accessible wreck for new and old divers alike.

Built in 1961, it was a working vessel around the state, the MV Andrew Wilson was involved in a number of different marine construction jobs around the state. Interestingly it was involved in the salvage of the wreck of the Whyalla Airlines Flight 904, which crashed into the Spencer Gulf in May 2000, playing a key part in the recovery.

The scuttling of the ship was part of the SA Government's algal bloom recovery package, taking over 2500 hours of time preparing it to become a wreck. This included taking out some internal walls, cutting holes in the hull for divers, and doing a deep clean of the wreck.

Currently there is a one year ban on fishing near the wreck, to allow sealife time to establish.
